What gets tested, and why it matters
"Third-party tested" is the most overused phrase in this category and almost nobody shows you what came back. These are the four panels, and each certificate shows which of them ran on that batch.

Identity and potency
Confirms the active is what the label says and that there is as much of it as the label claims. This is the one that decides whether a therapeutic dose is actually therapeutic.

Heavy metals
Arsenic, cadmium, mercury and lead. Minerals and plant extracts draw these from soil and water, so the only way to know a batch is clean is to measure it.

Microbiological
Yeast and mould, plate counts, and the named pathogens: salmonella, E. coli, staph, pseudomonas. Standard safety screening for any powder meant to be mixed and drunk.

Physical
Appearance, odour, taste, weight and how quickly it disperses. Less dramatic than the rest, and the reason a scoop behaves the same way in month nine as it did on day one.

Each certificate is the laboratory's own document, published as issued. Underneath it, the same results are written out so they can be read on a phone and found by search. The certificate is the record; the table is a copy of it.

Astaxanthin

The current Astaxanthin batch is with the laboratory and the certificate will be published here when it comes back. Astaxanthin is manufactured in a GMP-certified facility in West Auckland and is tested to the same four panels as everything else.
Testing is carried out by Certified Laboratories, accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 under certificate 3034.01, which is independent of Biosphere. On a certificate, a result shown as "less than" a figure means the analyte was below the level the instrument can reliably measure, which is the best possible outcome for a contaminant. If you want the certificate for the exact batch you have rather than the current one, the lot number is on the base of your tub and we will send it.
Questions about testing
What does "third-party tested" actually mean?
That the testing is done by a laboratory with no commercial interest in the result. Not us, and not the facility that makes the product. Almost every supplement brand uses the phrase, and the only thing that makes it mean anything is whether they will show you what came back.
Is every batch tested, or just the first one?
Every batch. A single test at launch tells you about one production run and nothing about the tub in your hand. Raw material varies, so the only claim worth making is the one that covers the batch you actually bought.
Why show both the certificate and a table?
The certificate is the evidence. It is the laboratory's own document, and a table we typed would only be as trustworthy as our word. The table sits underneath it so the results can be read on a phone and found by search. Every figure in it is copied from the certificate directly above, so you can check one against the other.
Why test for heavy metals at all?
Minerals and plant-derived ingredients take up what is in the soil and water they grew in, so trace amounts are present in ordinary food as well. The question is never whether they are detectable but whether they are within safe limits, and the only way to answer that is to measure each batch.
What does potency testing tell me that the label does not?
Whether the label is true. Our whole argument is that most supplements are formulated to a price rather than a result, and underdosing is the usual way that happens. Potency testing is the check on our own claim, which is the only reason it is worth anything.
