Most people who think they have a hydration problem are drinking a reasonable amount of water and still feeling flat by three in the afternoon. That is usually not a water problem. This is what is actually going on, how much you genuinely need, and the everyday things that drain you without you noticing.

Why water alone often is not enough
Water does not stay where you put it. For your body to actually hold on to what you drink and move it into cells, it needs minerals dissolved in it, chiefly sodium and potassium.
Sodium is the one that does the heavy lifting. It is the mineral that holds water in your bloodstream and tissues rather than letting it pass straight through you. Potassium works on the other side of the cell wall. The two together are what create the gradient that pulls water where it needs to go.
Drink a large volume of plain water when your minerals are already low and a good deal of it goes through you rather than into you. That is the specific reason someone can drink two litres, be in and out of the bathroom all day, and still feel dry-mouthed and foggy at four o'clock.

How to read this. Deliberately simplified. Nothing passes through you untouched and nothing is retained perfectly, but the difference in proportion is real, and it is the reason volume alone sometimes does nothing.
How much you actually need
There is no number, and the one everybody quotes is made up.
Eight glasses a day has no research behind it. It appears to have come from a 1945 recommendation that also said most of that amount is contained in prepared food, a sentence that got dropped somewhere along the way. Your actual need depends on your body size, the temperature, how much you move, how much salt you eat and how much water is already in what you eat.
Which makes counting glasses the wrong tool. Reading your own output is the right one, and it takes no effort at all.

How to read this. Two caveats. B vitamins turn urine bright yellow and that is dye, not dehydration. And some medications change colour independently, so if yours has and nothing else has, that is worth a question to your pharmacist rather than more water.
What you lose on an ordinary day
Sweat is the obvious one and it is not the main one. You lose fluid and minerals continuously, through skin, breath and urine, whether or not you have done anything.
Things that drain you without any exercise involved
All of these increase fluid or mineral losses on a completely ordinary day.

Which is why the answer to feeling dry is not always another glass of water. Sometimes it is what is dissolved in it.
How to read this. These are ordered by how often they catch people out rather than by size. Air conditioning is the one almost nobody counts, and for anyone working in an office it runs eight hours a day, five days a week.
The afternoon flat spot
This is the symptom most people arrive with, and it has been measured.
A randomised crossover study put 25 women through three separate eight-hour days in different hydration states. At 1.36 per cent dehydration, a level well below anything you would call being properly dehydrated, the researchers found degraded mood, more fatigue, less vigour, lower concentration, more headache, and tasks rated as harder than the same tasks in the hydrated state.
Two things about that study matter, and the second one is the reason to trust the first.
It found what it found, and no more. Most actual cognitive test scores were unaffected. This is not evidence that mild dehydration makes you think worse. It is evidence that it makes you feel worse, work harder for the same output, and get headaches. Which is precisely the complaint.
The sample was young women, and dehydration was produced by exercise. So it is not a direct map onto a fifty-five-year-old at a desk. What it establishes is that the threshold for feeling it is low, not that your specific afternoon is caused by the same thing.
Coffee, alcohol, and which one actually matters
These two get lumped together constantly and they behave completely differently.
Coffee does not dehydrate you
This one is settled and most people still believe the opposite. In a controlled crossover trial, 50 habitual coffee drinkers spent three days on four cups a day and three days on the equivalent water, with total body water measured directly using deuterium oxide. There was no difference between coffee and water on total body water, on 24-hour urine volume, on urine concentration, or on any blood marker of hydration.
Your coffee counts towards your fluid for the day. The study was done in men who already drank coffee regularly and at moderate intakes, so it does not tell you what happens if you are unaccustomed to caffeine or drinking a great deal more than that.
Alcohol genuinely does
Alcohol suppresses vasopressin, the hormone that tells your kidneys to hold on to water. The result is that you pass more fluid than you took in, and you lose minerals with it. That is most of what a hangover physically is.
The practical version: a glass of water between drinks does something real, and replacing minerals the following morning does more than water alone.
Who should go easier on sodium
Everything above points one way, so here is the group it does not apply to, stated properly rather than buried at the bottom in small print.
For everyone else, the reflex to cut sodium is worth examining, because it is the reason a lot of people who feel flat keep drinking water that is not helping them.
I do not agree with having to cut the sodium. Having good, proper doses is key, and sodium is generally beneficial.
500mg is in there because it is a good dose. An electrolyte with a token amount of sodium in it is not doing the job the sodium is there to do, which is to let your body actually hold the water you drink.

That is a position, not a universal rule, and it sits alongside the caution above rather than replacing it. The public health advice to reduce sodium is aimed at a population eating most of its salt from processed food, which is a different situation from someone deliberately replacing what they have lost.
Where an electrolyte earns its place
Not everything needs a scoop of anything in it. Being honest about that is more useful than pretending otherwise.
Plain water is completely fine for a normal day at a normal temperature when you are eating normally and feeling fine. Most of your mineral replacement comes from food, and if nothing is unusual then nothing needs adding.
An electrolyte earns its place when losses are higher than usual or when water alone has stopped working: a hot day, an air-conditioned office, the morning after a poor night or a few drinks, a long flight, a stomach upset, or the specific pattern of drinking plenty and still feeling flat and headachy mid-afternoon.
The way to use it is alongside water rather than instead of it. It is what makes the water you drink count, not a replacement for drinking.

There is no single number, and the eight glasses rule was never based on research. Your need depends on your size, the weather, how much you move and how much water is already in your food. If you drink plenty of water and still feel flat and headachy by mid-afternoon, replacing minerals rather than adding more water is the thing worth trying.
Can you drink too much water?
Yes, though it is uncommon. Drinking large volumes of plain water quickly can dilute the sodium in your blood, which is why endurance athletes are warned about it. For most people the practical version is milder: if you are drinking a lot and still feel flat, and your urine is completely clear all day, you may be washing minerals out faster than you replace them.
Should I be worried about the sodium in an electrolyte?
For most healthy people, the sodium is the point rather than the problem, because it is what allows your body to hold on to the water you drink. It is a genuine conversation to have with your doctor if you are on a sodium-restricted or potassium-restricted diet, or taking blood pressure or kidney medication. That is not a disclaimer, it is the one group for whom the general advice does not apply.
When is the best time to take an electrolyte?
Whenever your losses are highest or your energy is lowest. In practice that is usually the morning, a hot day, after a poor night's sleep, or the early afternoon when the flat feeling arrives. There is no clock-based rule worth following. What matters is that it goes in alongside water rather than instead of it.
